Serifos‘ Vagia beach will become Greece’s first smoke-free beach, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Athanassios K. Laskarides Foundation and the Municipality of Serifos.
The breakthrough initiative aims to copy successful attempts first made in France and Spain, where smoking has been banned from some beaches, with very positive results in the amount of pollution seen there.
On the beach in Vagia, local technicians from the island will construct a building where smokers will be able to go and light up during their stay on the beach, without annoying other bathers with their secondhand smoke.
Earlier this year, volunteers cleaned most of Serifos’ beaches and discovered that the island suffers from cigarette-related pollution since most of the smoking tourists leave their cigarette butts in the beach sand.
According to the plans of the new initiative on Serifos’ Vagia beach, the authorities will place ashtrays on the beach, along with signs that will inform tourists about the new reality for beachgoing smokers.
Serifos is located in the western part of Greece’s Cyclades archipelago, south of the islands of Kythnos and northwest of Sifnos, and is a popular destination for relaxing vacations.
